Moving to Connecticut

Before this new move to Connecticut. we lived in South Mississippi. As previously written in the ‘Welcome’ blog post, we came to New England on our wedding trip and visited Connecticut for a few days in beachside town on Niantic. One day, we were headed near Hartford and took a detour to explore. We saw the rolling hills, twisty roads, and quaint old towns; then I said, “I would love to live here!” After applying to jobs all over the country, my husband’s best job offer was Connecticut, so my wish did come true!

Our first visit to Niantic Bay, Connecticut ~ December 2022

We packed up our old house in a subdivision beginning in November 2023. My husband and I loved our old house but did not have privacy and land. Our goal was to find a house with some land and no close neighbors.

After we arrived in Connecticut in February 2024, I began searching for a home for us while he worked. As I looked all over Connecticut, our goal was to find some land and ancient stone walls were a must for me! After looking at fifteen homes, I discovered the perfect house with some acreage and almost a 1000 feet of stone walls that we both loved!

Connecticut soil is full of rocks! Why is that? Granite, gneiss, and schist are the most common types of rock found in Connecticut that were formed 300- 500 million years ago when pressure and heat deep underground melted the rock and then made it hard again. Rocks later came up to the surface and then were glaciated when thick sheets of ice moved from the Arctic across Connecticut. About 20,000 years ago, the last ice sheet moved across Connecticut leaving the beautiful rocks we see today in the landscape.

Our new yard had been neglected for over 20 years, so that was my first priority and to clear out the overgrown bushes that hid the beauty of the stone walls and rocks so they would be on full display. After many, many long hours of hard work, I finally created some of the vision I had for my yard.

I found the Colonial home and property of my dreams that I had envisioned for many years! I still have more property improvements to complete over the next few years such as planting more shrubbery and flowers; clearing growth on side property rock walls; and creating a small English garden!
This has not been an easy task, but it has been a true labor of love to create my vision of our new home.
